SUGGESTED STRATEGIES AND THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:

Don’t let bullies get away with it. With “minor” examples, you might just ignore them, but if it doesn’t stop, or it gets worse, don’t suffer in silence. Schools must deal with bullies, so speak to a teacher if the bullies go to your school or another school you know. This will be confidential and the school must find a way not to put you at greater risk. You might speak to your guidance teacher, head of year or school librarian. You might put it in writing, if you don’t want to say it out loud.

Try to tell your parents or carers. The bullies don’t want you to tell anyone so they will want to frighten you into silence. Don’t let them.

If you are physically attacked or threatened, this is assault and it’s a crime. It is now even more important to tell an adult you trust. Please.

Keep a record of the bullying, with dates. This is very useful for any adult trying to sort out the situation. Note what happened and how you felt.

If possible, avoid being on your own. There is strength in numbers and it is also useful if some-one witnesses any threats or signs of bullying.

Don’t fight back with violence.

Never blame yourself if you are bullied. Bullies bully whoever they want and it’s not your fault. Yes, there are certain types of people who are more often bullied, usually people who are not like the bullies. For example, people who ask questions in class, or who are serious and get on with their work. Sometimes there’s no reason at all but the bullies just think they will have fun bullying you.

Talk to your friends. Friends will understand. Otherwise they aren’t friends.

Focus on the things at school and home that make you happy, whether it’s a hobby, sport, or just hanging out with friends. Hold onto your friends: they are more important than the bullies.

Learn self-defence or a martial art. Not to fight back but to feel more confident and defend yourself. Often, when the bullies see that you can defend yourself, they will stop, because they are cowards.

Never, ever let bullies stop you doing well at the things you are good at. Aim for a glittering future – that’s the best way of defeating them.

Start an anti-bullying campaign in your school or area. Alex Holmes did this, creating anti-bullying ambassadors in his school and helping himself and others. (This is described in the InspireMyKids website at the back of this book, along with other useful websites.)

Talking about glittering futures, there are many stories of young people who were badly bullied at school going on to have enormous success. To me, this sounds a bit obvious, because we know that people with all sorts of skills and value are bullied. I’m making the point because being bullied can make you feel ugly, stupid and worthless. It can make you feel that life is not worth living. Life is worth living. It is.
